Betsy saw a healthcare system designed primarily to monitor, manage and medicate. Too often, treatment focused on suppressing symptoms while overlooking the deeper drivers of chronic illness: inflammation, insulin resistance, metabolic dysfunction, nutrition, sleep, stress, environmental exposures, and toxins.
Driven by the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to achieve vibrant health, Betsy pursued advanced training through the Institute for Functional Medicine. There, she discovered an approach centered on identifying root causes, personalizing care, and empowering patients to become active participants in their health journey.
The results were transformative—and it became clear that this model should not be available only to a select few.

3 Billion Beats was founded by husband-and-wife team Betsy Shor and Dr. Ben Costa—a partnership grounded in a shared passion for optimizing health and seeking truth beyond traditional training.
Together, they recognized a fundamental challenge:

3 Billion Beats is the digitization and integration of the work Betsy has been doing for years in her private practice one-on-one with patients. By combining functional medicine and traditional allopathic testing and treatment principles with behavior change coaching, the platform translates complex health data into clear, personalized action plans.
And it doesn't hurt to have an adorable, smart and slightly sassy AI coach named Corwin—who understands you medically and emotionally and can guide you every step of the way.
Our platform is not designed to replace clinicians—it is designed to amplify clinical care and help people become their own best advocates.

Betsy Shor
Co-Founder & Chief Medical Officer
Betsy is the clinical heart and moral compass of 3 Billion Beats. A progressive functional medicine provider with over a decade of experience in primary care, she courageously challenged conventional treatments when she realized they were failing her patients.
Driven by a refusal to accept suboptimal health outcomes and medication-based "band-aid" medical care, she completed two years of advanced functional medicine training through the Institute for Functional Medicine. She began integrating functional medicine into her primary care practice in 2018 and went on to found her own functional medicine practice, The Health Is Wealth Institute, in 2020.
Betsy employs a unique, integrative methodology that combines functional and nutritional medicine, traditional allopathic medicine (when appropriate), behavioral change science, and positive psychology to facilitate health optimization. The synergy of these approaches enables Betsy to help her patients not only KNOW what to do, but also DO what they know. She is able to help patients create profound and lasting health transformations by identifying and treating the root cause of their physical and emotional unwellness and then supporting behavior change through high-level, solution-oriented coaching and accountability.
Betsy invests a tremendous amount of energy in her own health and hopes to infuse others with the same zest for self-care. She is the mother of two spunky, hilarious daughters, Mela and Jovie, and is married to her best friend, Ben, who is also her best coach. In her free time, she enjoys running with her dog, hiking, cycling—a passion that began at age 15 when she rode 4,000 miles across the United States—and eating baklava.

Dr. Ben Costa, DMD
Co-Founder & Chief Technical Officer
Ben is the technical architect and analytical rigor behind the 3 Billion Beats platform. A systems thinker and technical artist, his unique background provides the lens required to translate complex biological challenges into elegant, scalable solutions.
His foundation in systems analysis began with an undergraduate degree in Physics and work analyzing complex data at the MIT Bates Laboratory particle accelerator. He went on to serve as Chief Dentist of the Harvard Dental Center until 2022 and continues to teach at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.
3 Billion Beats has enabled Ben to merge his passion for technology and systems design with data-driven medicine. His commitment to technical and clinical precision drives the personalized AI architecture for Corwin.
Ben is a former co-founder of Audrey Design, a digital web design and animation company, and is also an oil painter who lived and worked within the AS220 artists' community in Providence, Rhode Island for several years. On a personal level, Ben enjoys cooking, running, investing, and spending time with his family of strong-willed women.
